Four Mews Houses East Croydon
Budget: £950,000
Status: Planning Approved
Local Authority: Croydon
Client: Private
Sector: Listed Building / Residential
This architectural endeavour presents a contemporary interpretation through the construction of four new-build mews houses situated behind a Locally Listed Building, in close proximity to East Croydon Station. Meticulous attention has been given to material selection, particularly the use of reclaimed London yellow-stock bricks and their mortar colour, crafting a modern dialogue with the adjacent Victorian structure. The proposed scheme, in its nascent stage, draws inspiration from the grain and palette of the Locally Listed Building (LLB), aiming not to replicate but to embrace its character. The integration of these reclaimed bricks seamlessly weaves a connection between the historical and the new. The constrained site conditions present challenges in terms of light and outlook, necessitating innovative solutions for a successful implementation.
The design takes cues from the scale and rhythm of the surrounding terraces, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the street scene with a modern twist on Victorian architecture. Dark brown weathered brick and zinc cladding on the roof contribute to the aesthetic. Regular entrances into ground floor units animate the street, while each unit features its own private terrace. A communal garden enhances amenity space for residents.
Originally granted planning for a two-storey structure, the scheme underwent resubmission, incorporating a third floor to accommodate an additional unit and bedroom, demonstrating adaptability and optimisation of spatial resources.
